Remember the kid who was murdered this summer and then his life was celebrated at a wake where he was placed in a chair and his mother had him playing NBA2K with Doritos and a root beer next to his seat? Police say they’ve arrested Renard Matthews’ murderer. It appears, at long last, Renard’s killer will face justice for senselessly ending a life of a kid who just wanted to play video games and be to himself.
In fact, this summer Matthews’ mother said her son had only recently started venturing out after she bought a dog. It’s a horrible story, but the family was able to hold a lovely wake and remember Renard how he would’ve wanted to be remembered.
Nineteen-year-old Jonovan Parker has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder for the killing of Renard Matthews on June 25, according to the NOPD.
Detectives issued an arrest warrant for Parker on October 31, and he was arrested on November 10 after an investigation lead to his identification as the prime suspect.
Here is the alleged killer:
Matthews was shot in the head on Independence Street near the intersection of Tonti Street around 9:40 p.m., according to New Orleans police. Melvin Morgan, a neighbor who was at the scene Monday said he was stunned to hear of Matthews’ death.
Morgan said he had seen Matthews just over three hours earlier, and the two spoke while the teen was walking his dog.
