Dildos in baseball locker rooms is nothing new these days. In fact, we’ve posted multiple blogs about MLB teams rocking out with rubber dongs in their clubhouses. Literally just last week the Tigers were tossing around not one, but two giant dildos during a rain delay. This is nothing new.
So when I came across this story out of UNC-Wilmington, I was taken aback a little bit. This week UNCW fired their pitching coach, Matt Williams, after five years with few details as to why. After some long and hard investigative work by Wilmington’s Star-News, it turns out he was fired after setting up a Skype session with his players and speaker Brian Cain ( a guy that frequently speaks to the team), who used a massive dildo as a motivational tool for the pitchers. They called it the “Dick of Death”.

In May 2017, UNCW pitchers met with Cain in a Skype session that would have been considered routine.
According to multiple attendees, Williams set up a computer and TV for the session, then relocated to the back of the room.
During the presentation, players say, Cain brandished a dildo, calling it the Dick of Death. The metaphor was that the pitchers should think of themselves as the bigger men on the field, capable of overpowering the batter they were facing. Cain encouraged the pitchers to create their own Dick of Death to serve as a reminder and motivational tool. Without the knowledge of the coaching staff, a group of players did just that.
At some point, the prop made its way from the Fisher Field House to the dugout at Brooks Field. A photo of the Dick of Death being held by a player during the 2017 CAA Tournament game against William & Mary was available on the school’s website as of Friday.
Cain has not spoken to the team since that May 2017 session.
So just to recap: the pitching coach who was fired did NOT brandish the dong, however, he did set up the video feed with the motivational speaker (Cain) who did break out the dildo. The players then took his advice, got themselves a nice quality ramrod and rode that thing all the way to a CAA championship this year.
Even with that, the dildo had already done its damage. UNCW investigated it in late-2017, actually tried to fire Williams during the season which was met with an internal player revolt, so they waited until after the season (this week) to send him packing.
All around, a WILD story and in my opinion, an unjust firing. Seems like somebody needed a scapegoat. I guess the moral here is wait until you’re a professional to use motivational dildos.
