Why is Phil Mickelson wearing a long sleeve button up shirt at the TPC Sawgrass when it’s blazing hot outside Jacksonville at the Players Championship? Well, it’s because he’s loyal to the brand — Mizzen & Main — that just gave him a chunk of money and equity in the company, as reported by our friend Darren Rovell.
That’s why Lefty is creating headlines this afternoon on social media and during the golf broadcast where — is that Jimmy Roberts — the shirt is causing concern. Let’s not forget the black pants. Lefty’s going to drop 15 pounds out there today. Might even go for a pound per hole.
As for the shirts, the basic long sleeves are $145. That’s right, $145. On its website, Phil supposedly makes a statement that was probably crafted by a marketing department. He says:
I was waiting to find the perfect apparel partner that truly changed the game, and Mizzen + Main has done just that. These dress shirts not only look incredible but are so comfortable and versatile I can actually play golf in them. It’s remarkable to have a dress shirt I can wear from a meeting to the course.
Can’t believe I just gave this company so much free marketing. Oh well, that’s the blogging life sometimes.
Lefty is indeed wearing a @MizzenAndMain dress shirt for today’s round. Signed deal with company yesterday, cash + equity stake. pic.twitter.com/uRlT0vvoSk
