Browns GM John Dorsey spent the weekend acting like he’s the biggest gunslinger in the NFL, bragging to Peter King or any other Big J who called, that it was Baker Mayfield for the last six weeks and how they didn’t want to take any chances by drafting Barkley No. 1 and waiting to take Mayfield at No. 4. There’s now a covering tracks storyline out there now where the Bills would trade up (not sure with whom) to snag Mayfield and ruin the Browns draft. Whatever. It’s all lies.
Anyway, the Browns now have Johnny Mayfield and the drama starts today. The BC Mayfield Tracking System goes into place today. I’m definitely not going to complain about the Browns going Johnny Mayfield here. This is incredible for business. That’s the first thing Danny the Intern mentioned Friday morning during our unofficial work meeting on Slack.
The bad news is that the Browns have a competent guy in Tygod ready to go for this season. Mayfield’s not going to come in and win the opening day job anyway. Johnny came in and people thought he needed to start day one. That helped turn his career into a dumpster fire.
Now I have to hope that Mayfield’s desire to be Mr. Hollywood turns into something that can be converted into Pageviews. He’s not going to hate the city like Manziel hated Cleveland. The guy straight up couldn’t wait to get out of northern Ohio. Mayfield seems way less high maintenance there.
I’m still convinced this is going to go south before the rookie contract is up. I could see Johnny Mayfield going off on Browns fans, causing such intense drama between the two sides that he gets shipped out so the franchise doesn’t dissolve any further.
We’ll see. Just my prediction.
