College athletics are completely screwed up, in case you didn’t know
Let’s go to UNLV where the school is having an athletic gear sale to clear out old stuff that has piled up. You know the deal: fans come and get authentic gear, spend less than they would in the team store and the school makes a few bucks. Then there’s this passage from the Las Vegas Sun: In a slightly comical scene that plays out at each one of these, some former athletes (or their families) attend to purchase the jersey they wore while playing for the Rebels. Amateurism rules don’t allow athletes to keep all the uniforms they wear while in college, but for a donation back to the program they can be reunited with their gear.
Yeah, comical. You know what would ruin amateur athleticism? Giving the players the jerseys they wore. It would completely ruin athletics. Maybe one day the morons who run college sports will stop this madness and actually let a guy who stays all four years to walk away with the jersey he wore. It seems like something that makes some sense.
Numbers from @SportsTaxMan:
The minimum salary for a #MLB player in 2015 = $507,500. Thats $2,773 per in season day.
