I have always wondered if professional sports leagues compile the most damaging social media updates and present them at those rookie symposiums where players are supposed to learn how to not to be a disgrace. If they don’t, they definitely should.
And one of the first examples should be an Instagram update posted by Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli, a.k.a. “Super Mario.” The talented striker brought down a hail of criticism on himself after posting an offensive Super Mario photo which was headlined, “Don’t be racist!”
I would imagine it would be tough to offend like five races and be anti-Semitic at the same time, but Balotelli managed to do it with just one tap! Plus, he did so at expense of the video game character his nickname is based off of.
Definitely a jarring move by a controversial figure who has been on the receiving end of racial slurs in the past.
Balotelli took to Twitter to apologize and claimed he was just trying to be “anti-racist with humor”:
He also wants all the Jews to get off his back because his mom is apparently Jewish:
According to Sky Sports, the Football Association is looking into the post. They also note that the minimum punishment for being a racist is five games.
