The Toledo Mud Hens said they were going to put a mini-golf course in the outfield of Fifth Third Field and the team kept its word. You’re looking at what is believed to be the first mini-golf course in the outfield of a professional baseball field in sports history.
From the Mud Hens PR team:
Fifth Third Field is going to the birdies this fall! Before the ballpark gets made into an outdoor hockey rink for Walleye Winterfest, presented by ProMedica, it will become an 18-hole miniature golf course! The Links at Fifth Third Field, presented by Hall of Framers & Meyer Hill Lynch, opens to the public September 25-28.
This is the first time a minor league ballpark has been turned into a mini-golf course. “I always thought it would be interesting to see a natural grass putt-putt course,” says Jake Tyler, Sports Turf Manager. “The timing is perfect to create this once in a lifetime opportunity for our community.”
The Links at Fifth Third Field will be flat with no rolling hills and slopes, but it will be challenging. The first nine holes will have a lot of angles, dog legs, and sand traps. The back nine gets confusing when the fairway of 14 and 15 intersect each other and hole 17 may be the hardest because it finishes up on top of the pitcher’s mound.”
A round of mini-golf will cost $15. Name another offseason baseball promotion better than this? Yeah, maybe outdoor hockey, but that’s only fun when it’s the NHL and not some minor league team you don’t care about. Speaking of outdoor hockey, the Mud Hens will transition from the mini-golf course to getting ready for hockey. They’ll be installing a hockey rink for the Toledo Walleye Winterfest in late December. The days of closing the doors and waiting for spring are officially over.
