Cam Ward’s second season didn’t start the way the Titans hoped. Tennessee’s young quarterback struggled mightily in a 23-10 Week 1 loss to the New York Jets, and outside of one late drive, he really didn’t show much.
The numbers tell the story. Ward finished 19-of-32 for just 140 yards and one touchdown – not exactly the kind of stat line that inspires confidence in Nashville.
That lone touchdown came during garbage time, when Ward marched the Titans 65 yards in nine plays, eating up almost two-and-a-half minutes in the process. It was too little, too late.

Ward wasn’t the only one struggling on offense. Tennessee managed only 195 total yards for the game, with just 68 of those coming on the ground. The Titans also got dominated in time of possession, holding the ball for roughly half as long as New York did. Add in three sacks allowed, and it’s clear the offensive line has some issues to sort out too.
Still, it’s Ward’s performance that should worry Titans fans most.

He’s supposed to be the guy leading this franchise into the future. Instead, he looked lost out there for most of the game, missing throws and struggling to find any rhythm.
What makes this loss sting even more is who it came against. The Jets aren’t exactly a juggernaut right now, and they made their fair share of mistakes too – losing close to 50 yards on penalties alone, and even missing a field goal after recovering a fumble on a kickoff. Tennessee still couldn’t take advantage.
Ward addressed the loss during his press conference, saying he didn’t want to point fingers, though he acknowledged there’s plenty to fix.
“I’m very disappointed. We were better than what we showed, offensively,” Ward said. “It didn’t pay off for us today but it’s going to pay off for us eventually, whether it’s next week or the week after, but we’re going to get it rolling.”
Sure, it’s only Week 1. Nobody’s hitting the panic button just yet. But this is exactly the kind of start Tennessee couldn’t afford, especially with expectations already so low heading into the year. If Ward keeps struggling like this, the conversation around Tennessee’s quarterback situation could shift quickly – and that’s not where anyone wanted this season to start.
Jets Off to a Solid Start
New York, on the other hand, has plenty to feel good about. The Jets got on the board immediately, with tight end Kenyon Sadiq hauling in a 3-yard touchdown on the opening drive. By the end of the night, New York had piled up 367 total yards, showing an offense that looked far more put-together than anyone expected.
One thing missing from the stat sheet? An interception.
New York didn’t record a single pick all of last season, and that drought carried right into this one too. The Jets will be looking to snap that streak sooner rather than later – preferably before it becomes a talking point every single week.
