Ja’Lynn Polk won’t be catching passes for the Saints, or anyone else, this season. New Orleans placed the 24-year-old wide receiver on the reserve/retired list Sunday, according to multiple reports, ending his brief and injury-plagued stint with the franchise.
Polk came into the league with plenty of promise. New England drafted him in the second round back in 2024 out of Washington, and he played in 15 games as a rookie for the Patriots. That’s usually the kind of workload that gets a young receiver excited about year two.
Year two didn’t go as planned.
The Saints acquired Polk in a trade last year, sending New England a 2027 sixth-round pick and getting back Polk along with a 2028 seventh-round pick. It looked like a low-risk swing for New Orleans at the time. Instead, Polk never played a single snap for his new team – a shoulder injury landed him on IR before he ever got the chance to suit up.
This offseason was supposed to be his fresh start. Polk had been going through training camp with the team, but he was reportedly excused from practice over the last two sessions before Sunday’s news broke. Head coach Kellen Moore didn’t get into specifics when asked about it, only telling reporters that Polk was dealing with “personal things.”
Whatever those things are, they’re clearly significant enough for Polk to walk away from football entirely heading into what would’ve been his third pro season.
It’s worth noting that Polk likely wasn’t walking into a starting job anyway. New Orleans has Chris Olave locked in as a top target, and rookie Jordyn Tyson has also climbed the depth chart quickly. Realistically, Polk was looking at a rotational role – solid playing time, sure, but not a featured spot in the offense. Still, for a former second-round pick, stepping away before even getting a real shot with his second team is a notable turn in what looked like a promising career just two years ago.
