The Panthers cut ties with wide receiver Hunter Renfrow on Tuesday, making room for veteran David Moore who’s returning from injured reserve just in time for Saturday’s wild-card matchup against the Rams.
Renfrow, 30, had been attempting a comeback with Carolina after sitting out the entire 2023 season while battling ulcerative colitis – an autoimmune condition that sidelined the former Pro Bowler.
Though initially cut at the end of training camp, the ex-Clemson standout rejoined the active roster in August when Jalen Coker landed on IR with a quad injury. Renfrow showed flashes of his old form with two TD grabs in Week 2’s loss to Arizona, but he hasn’t seen the field since Carolina’s October 12 victory over Dallas.
Moore’s return could provide a much-needed spark.
The veteran wideout has been sidelined with an elbow injury suffered back in Week 4. While his on-field production was limited (just one catch for 5 yards) before the injury, Moore’s presence as a locker room leader has been sorely missed during Carolina’s up-and-down season.
With Tetairoa McMillan establishing himself as the team’s top target and Coker now healthy, Moore should have opportunities to contribute immediately – especially considering 2024 first-round selection Xavier Legette’s recent struggles. The rookie saw his playing time plummet to a career-low 31% of offensive snaps during last weekend’s defeat to Tampa Bay.
The Panthers also waived safety Demani Richardson as part of Tuesday’s roster shuffle.
