Mike Ditka Received a City Clerk Write-In Vote

On Tuesday, one Bears fan’s love for Mike Ditka went next level when he wrote in the legendary coach with his vote for Chicago City Clerk.
It’s a nice gesture, only he made a slight hiccup—he took a picture of his ballot and tweeted it, which is apparently a felony in Illinois:

Twitter user @charlescubfan seemed to think the board was just giving him a hard time, but they ended up giving him a nice lesson in law:

The statute tweeted reads as:

Sec. 29-9. Unlawful observation of voting. Except as permitted by this Code, any person who knowingly marks his ballot or casts his vote on a voting machine or voting device so that it can be observed by another person, and any person who knowingly observes another person lawfully marking a ballot or lawfully casting his vote on a voting machine or voting device, shall be guilty of a Class 4 felony.

And to make matters worse for @charlescubfan, write-in votes are only counted if that specific person is running—per The Chicago Tribune.
So there you have it, Chicagoans. Cute write-in votes for your legends are so not worth the hassle.
