49ers Voided Guaranteed Money in Aiyuk Deal for 2026 Source Reports

Brandon Aiyuk’s future with the 49ers looks increasingly uncertain as the star wideout continues his recovery from a catastrophic knee injury suffered in October. With just six games left in the regular season, there’s growing doubt he’ll ever suit up for San Francisco again.

The relationship between player and team has deteriorated significantly. During training camp, the 49ers voided Aiyuk’s guaranteed money for 2026 because he wasn’t meeting the requirements of his contract, according to a league source. The Athletic first broke news of this contract modification, which includes a massive $24.935 million option bonus. This bonus – originally guaranteed as of April 1 – has now been completely voided.

Aiyuk is also due a $1.215 million base salary plus workout and per-game bonuses. It’s anyone’s guess whether he’ll see that money, though. The elimination of his 2026 guarantees essentially gives the Niners a clean break pathway.

The immediate question hangs over this season. Will Aiyuk play at all?

His injury against the Chiefs was devastating – tearing his ACL, MCL, and meniscus in one catastrophic play. He’s been working through rehab since, but the timeline has grown murky. During training camp, Kyle Shanahan expressed hope that Aiyuk would return to practice around Week 7. When asked Monday about Aiyuk’s status, Shanahan kept it vague.

“Brandon’s just week-to-week,” the coach said. “When he had such a big injury like that, just waiting until he is fully comfortable to come up and start practicing.”

A source confirms Aiyuk hasn’t been medically cleared yet. That doesn’t mean the team’s been happy with the situation – far from it. Tensions date back months before he signed that four-year, $120 million extension on August 29, 2024.

The extension itself came after a contentious standoff where Aiyuk nearly found himself wearing different colors. At various points, trades to the Browns, Patriots, and Steelers were close to happening. The Pittsburgh deal was particularly close before Aiyuk and Shanahan appeared to patch things up, leading to the contract agreement.

But the harmony was short-lived. Signs of discord emerged quickly, including a public practice field disagreement where Shanahan ordered Aiyuk to change from red shorts into the team-standard black ones that everyone else wore.

After missing training camp due to his contract holdout, Aiyuk struggled through the season’s first four games. He seemed to be finding his rhythm in Week 5, exploding for 8 catches and 147 yards against Arizona. Two weeks later, his season came crashing down with the knee injury against Kansas City.

Sources say the 49ers had planned to trade Aiyuk this offseason if not for the injury. His health concerns combined with his massive contract killed any serious trade market from developing.

Despite the tensions, Aiyuk was a consistent presence during training camp, even earning praise from receivers coach Leonard Hankerson for helping the team’s younger wideouts.

Things have changed recently. Though Aiyuk has attended workouts and rehab, he’s been noticeably absent from the media-open portions of practice for weeks. He hasn’t been spotted in the locker room during media sessions either.

Aiyuk remains on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list rather than injured reserve. This distinction matters – it means he wouldn’t count against the team’s eight-player IR return limit. The Niners could technically open his practice window without him ever playing in a game.

On November 5, Shanahan offered a somewhat optimistic assessment when asked if Aiyuk might play this season.

“I’m pretty confident that he is going to eventually,” Shanahan said then. “At least, open up his practice window.”

The 49ers will hold their final practice of the week Saturday afternoon before Monday night’s showdown with the Panthers. Shanahan is scheduled to speak afterward, potentially providing the latest update on this increasingly complex situation.
