Chiefs Target Top AFC Tackle to Boost Mahomes Protection

Kansas City’s left tackle position has been a revolving door throughout the 2024 season, despite early optimism surrounding second-round draft pick Kingsley Suamataia during training camp.

The Chiefs’ offensive line struggles started early — Suamataia gave up two sacks in Week 2, prompting his benching in favor of second-year tackle Wanya Morris. When Morris couldn’t secure the position, the team brought in veteran D.J. Humphries, but that experiment didn’t pan out either.

In a last-ditch effort, Kansas City shifted All-Pro guard Joe Thuney to left tackle and promoted Mike Caliendo to fill Thuney’s guard position.

The constant shuffling at such a crucial position has made one thing clear: finding a reliable left tackle is Kansas City’s top offseason priority.

Quality left tackles are as rare as franchise quarterbacks in the NFL. The best prospects typically get snatched up early in the draft, while teams rarely let established veterans test free agency.

But this offseason might be different.

The Washington Post’s Jason La Canfora reports that Baltimore Ravens left tackle Ronnie Stanley could be available. Stanley, who’ll turn 31 next season, is coming off one of his healthiest and most productive years. Baltimore’s tight salary cap situation might force them to let him walk.

“Doesn’t that just seem like what Andy Reid would do to fix his biggest need?”

an unnamed NFL general manager told La Canfora.
