The Green Bay Packers were the first team to make a big move in free agency back in 1993 when they signed Reggie White, a legendary defensive end. This was a surprise because, usually, the Packers don’t like to bring in players from other teams. They prefer to build their team using the NFL Draft and by developing their own players.
However, this strategy isn’t just about preference. Geography plays a role too. Green Bay is a small town with cold weather, making it tough to attract big-name players who might prefer larger cities.
Even though the Packers aren’t expected to be very active before the trade deadline on November 5, they might still make some moves. Preston Smith, a veteran pass rusher, has caught the attention of several teams due to the league-wide shortage of quality pass rushers this season. Dianna Russini from The Athletic reported that teams have been reaching out to Green Bay about Smith’s availability.
Last year, the Packers made a trade under different circumstances. With a poor 2-5 record, they traded cornerback Rasul Douglas and a draft pick to the Buffalo Bills. Although it seemed wise at the time, Douglas had an impressive season with the Bills, which wasn’t ideal for Green Bay.
This year, things are looking up for the Packers. They’re 6-2 and could take the top spot in the NFC North if they beat the Detroit Lions on Sunday. But that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t consider trading Smith. At 31, he’s one of the oldest players on the team and has played fewer snaps this season than any other since his rookie year.
Smith has been with the Packers since 2019 as an outside linebacker but recently returned to defensive end. Given his reduced role and significant salary cap hit, it’s possible the Packers might trade him this week.
