Christian McCaffrey’s Absence May Extend Beyond Week 1

San Francisco 49ers’ star running back, Christian McCaffrey, was surprisingly ruled out just before the team’s first game of the 2024 NFL season. This means he might miss more games, as per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Schefter spoke about this on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown.

Schefter mentioned that McCaffrey might not return for the next game against the Minnesota Vikings. He said, “Not only is Christian McCaffrey out tonight –but there’s a real chance he’s not going to play on [next] Sunday [at Minnesota] either.”

Yikes! That’s tough news for 49ers fans.

Schefter added that there’s a “real strong possibility” McCaffrey won’t play in Minnesota due to the short gap between games and the Vikings’ turf field.

McCaffrey’s calf strain kept him out of the season opener against the New York Jets. Although it seemed like he would play, things have changed, and now he might miss multiple weeks.

He barely practiced all summer because of his calf issue and has also been dealing with an Achilles problem. The 49ers are being very careful with him since he’s such an important player.

Given that San Francisco is aiming for the Super Bowl, it’s smart to be cautious with McCaffrey. But it’s still worrying because he was expected to play against New York.

Without McCaffrey, the 49ers’ offense isn’t quite the same. However, backup running back Jordan Mason stepped up big time against the Jets, making some impressive plays and scoring touchdowns.

Perhaps seeing Mason perform well made the team more comfortable resting McCaffrey until he’s fully recovered. Anyway, his status for the game against the Vikings remains uncertain.
