Nick Sirianni, the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, is usually very passionate and competitive. He shows his emotions openly, so it’s easy to see when he acts differently.
On Monday, Sirianni talked to reporters about the Eagles’ 2023 season and offseason plans.
He was asked about rumors that the team considered replacing him with Bill Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl-winning coach. Surprisingly, Sirianni’s response was calm and measured. “All I really took at this was I had Mr. [Jeffrey] Lurie’s trust,” Sirianni said via Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports. “And they said, ‘Hey, let’s go back and let’s do it again.’ That’s all I thought about. I haven’t really thought about anything else. I think it’s really tricky to think about things that you can’t control.”
Despite the buzz around Belichick, Sirianni stressed he’s focused on what he can control. He aims to lead the Eagles with the same dedication as always. However, it’s clear that the rumors have affected him.
Before 2023, Sirianni would have shrugged off any concerns about Belichick confidently. But last year’s late-season collapse seems to have humbled him. Plus, knowing the team explored other coaching options doesn’t help morale.
The Eagles started strong with a 10-1 record but lost five of their last six games. They were then defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the playoffs despite being favorites. While Sirianni kept his job after this tough season, his offensive and defensive coordinators weren’t as lucky.
In three seasons with the Eagles, Sirianni boasts a 34-17 record. His .667 winning percentage is the highest in franchise history. He led Philly to Super Bowl LVII in his second year and has made it to the playoffs three times.
Regardless of any chatter about Belichick, Sirianni’s impressive résumé speaks for itself.
