Former Major League pitcher Dan Serafini was arrested in Nevada on Friday.

According to reports, the 49-year-old Serafini and 33-year-old Samantha Scott were arrested in connection to the 2021 murder of 70-year-old Robert Gary Spohr and the attempted murder of 68-year-old Wendy Wood in Lake Tahoe, California, in 2021.

Spohr and Wood were Serafini’s father-in-law and mother-in-law.

When police responded to call on June 5, 2021, they found Spohr dead from a single gunshot wound. Wood, meanwhile, was also shot but was hospitalized and recovered from those injuries. She died a year later.

“Today, justice was served. The apprehension of those responsible for the tragic events that unfolded in Homewood, North Lake Tahoe in 2021 stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication of our detectives, law enforcement partners, and the persistence of our pursuit of truth,” the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

“Understand that my team’s commitment to unraveling the most complex of cases prevails, and those who inflict harm upon our community will be held accountable every time.”

The relationship between Serafini and Scott was not revealed, but the sheriff’s office did say the “suspects were known to each other.”

Serafini was listed as an inmate at Humbolt County Detention Center on a charge of being a fugitive from justice. Scott was listed as an inmate in the Clark County Detention Center on a warrant charging her as a fugitive from another state.

Authorities have gathered evidence throughout their investigation that links Serafini and Scott to the crimes and led to them being suspects. There is also surveillance video from the home.

Throughout his MLB career from 1996 through 2007, Serafini played for the Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, and Colorado Rockies.

Serafini also had brief stints in the Chinese Professional Baseball League, Mexican League, and Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan.

Before his MLB came to an end, he was suspended for 50 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
