Thalia Chaverria, a 20-year-old soccer player at New Mexico State University, has been pronounced dead after being found unresponsive in her room on Monday. No foul play is suspected. First responders arrived at the home around 7:00 a.m. local time and Chaverria was already deceased.
The Las Cruces Police Department said they “have no reason to believe Chaverria’s death is suspicious or the result of criminal activity,” according to reports.
Chaverria celebrated her 20th birthday on July 2.

“Yesterday, we lost an amazing young woman, and we are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of a member of our Aggie family,” New Mexico State director of athletics Mario Moccia said in a statement. “Thalia had a vibrant personality and those who were fortunate enough to spend time with her knew she had a bright future ahead of her.
“The New Mexico State community is very tight-knit, and this tragedy is felt throughout. Our most sincere thoughts and prayers go out to Thalia’s family and friends in this time of mourning.”
Chaverria was set to enter her junior year with the Aggies. Last season, Chaverrie started in 20 games as a defender and helped New Mexico State claim its first-ever WAC title in women’s soccer.
“The sudden loss of Thalia has completely rocked our Aggie soccer families’ world. T was an inspiration and rock to this team,” head coach Rob Baarts said in a statement. “She will be missed but not forgotten. Her spirit will be with us every day, on and off the pitch. I will always love you T!”
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for Chaverria’s family to raise money for her parents to transport her body from New Mexico to her hometown of Bakersfield, California.
At the time of this writing, the fundraiser has raised over $28,000.
