Tiger Woods shot a 2-under 69 during Round 1 of the Genesis Invitational on Thursday. It was an impressive performance in the 47-year-old’s return to the course, but that’s not all that had people talking.

Woods outdrove Justin Thomas on the 9th hole at Riviera Country Club in the Genesis Invitational and then slipped something into his hand. Thomas immediately tossed the object to the ground, but the internet quickly discovered it was a tampon.

It was a silly, harmless joke between two friends, but the Twitter mob was not happy.

Woods received backlash for being crass, misogynistic, sexist, and a bunch of other buzzword labels, so after Round 2 on Friday he issued an apology.

“Yeah, it was supposed to be all fun and games and obviously it hasn’t turned out that way,” Woods said. “If I offended anybody, it was not the case, it was just friends having fun.

“As I said, if I offended anybody in any way, shape or form, I’m sorry. It was not intended to be that way. It was just we play pranks on one another all the time and virally I think this did not come across that way, but between us it was — it’s different.”

Woods did what he had to do to please the Twitter mob, but any reasonable person knows it was a silly, harmless joke. It’s nothing to get upset about.

As for on the course, Woods shot +3 on the day and now sits at 1-over for the tournament as he waits to see whether he will make the cut and continue to play into the weekend.
