MLS player Anton Walkes has tragically died at age 25.
The team confirmed the news of Walkes’ passing in a statement. The defender and midfielder had been fatally injured in a boat accident in Florida.

According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Walkes was discovered unconscious and received CPR after a two-boat crash on Wednesday afternoon. Walkes was operating one of the boats and was taken to the local hospital before dying from his injuries, according to TMZ Sports.
He passed away on Thursday morning.
“There are no words to describe the sorrow of everyone in Major League Soccer today after learning of the tragic passing of Anton Walkes of Charlotte FC,” MLS said in a statement. “Anton was a talented and dedicated player who was loved by his teammates and fans. We extend our deepest condolences to his partner, family, friends and the entire Charlotte FC family.”
Walkes joined Charlotte FC with the second pick of the 2021 MLS Expansion Draft after playing for Atlanta United the previous year.
