Brittney Griner is thankful for all of the support she received while serving the past 10 months in a Russian prison, and now she is asking fans to do the same for a fellow American who is detained in Russia.

Griner shared an Instagram post where she thanked fans for their messages while she was behind bars and expressed how it helped her during the dark time. And now, she is asking for fans to do the same and send letters of support to former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan.

Whelan is serving 16 years in Russian prison for an espionage charge in 2018.

“Your letters were also bigger than uplifting me,” Griner said. “They showed me the power of collective hands. Together, we can do hard things. I’m living proof of that… My family is whole and now, thanks to you, we are fortunate to get to spend the holidays together. However, there remain too many families with loved ones wrongfully detained.

“I hope you’ll join me in writing to Paul Whelan and continuing to advocate for other Americans to be rescued and returned to their families.”

Griner also included the address people can use to send their letters of support to the former Marine.

Many criticized the decision to exchange Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for Griner without also bringing Whelan home, but Griner is now hoping she can use her situation to help free Whelan and using her platform to rally support.
