Serena Williams is calling it a career.

The tennis legend announced in an article for Vogue, Williams announced that she will be retiring from tennis in the coming weeks, possibly after the upcoming U.S. Open.

“There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction. That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness do I enjoy tennis. But now, the countdown has begun. I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena,” the 40-year-old wrote.

“I’m gonna relish these next few weeks.”

Williams has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles throughout her illustrious career and is one short of Margaret Court’s all-time mark of 24. Her last Grand Slam victory came in 2017 when she defeated her sister Venus to win the Australian Open while pregnant with her daughter Olympia.

A storybook ending for Williams’ career would be to go out on top as the U.S. Open champion and tying Court’s all-time record, but regardless of how it ends, Williams will always be remembered as the best women’s tennis player to ever step onto the court.
