Greening is all about awareness-raising and concrete action taking in environmental contexts. Greening is the process through which a higher education institution, any other type of institution, a person, a group of people or a community adopt green, environmentally friendly and resource-efficient behaviour.
Greening in higher education institutions
In the first place, greening addresses the members of a university or a college. Usually, it concerns its students, professors, and staff. But greening is a broader concept; by collaborating with local public institutions, higher education institutions can bring greening to the following regional level. The differences are mainly connected to implementing this practice: some higher education institutions stop at activities related to an environmentally friendly mindset. As long as mobility is involved, the greening initiatives at higher education institutions usually establish initiatives in which commuting is not involved. For instance, digital devices for online learning and completely online delivered courses or even blended lesson formats are but a few examples of this ecological action. Of course, during the pandemics, virtual forms of working and learning became standard or even compulsory, but this trend is now meant to last. Virtual student and staff mobility are becoming standard features in universities and colleges that adhere to greening practices. Last but not least, commuting by using public transportation and transport means using green energy are also encouraged by the institutions at hand.
Greening is a crucial part of the extracurricular activities in many higher education institutions, and some universities and colleges even include it in their curriculum reforms and programmes. In any case, institutions usually make greening part of their teaching and learning activities. It is the most helpful way of instructing their students to think and act responsibly towards the environment.
There are, however, some higher education institutions that use greening methods in their laboratories, which have been specially installed for that purpose. There are also some initiatives, for instance, for reducing the environmental footprint on laboratory research or posing greening involving problem-solving exercises to student entrepreneurs.
Campuses and collaboration projects
Greening on campuses is another crucial aspect. Most campuses give their contribution by improving the way they handle waste, that is, recycling. Sustainability in the construction materials and renovation processes is another possibility to maintain university or college campuses environmentally friendly. Campuses may use sustainable energy for heating, water, and other types of energy they need. Many higher education institutions can green their campuses somehow: even if the building might be old and not sustainable, they can still recycle or do something else that has a more minor but still a contribution-rich impact.
To have a more effective impact, most higher education institutions engage with student organisations and groups for greening activities. That implies a more wide-range and better effect of greening activities. Moreover, colleges and universities may also collaborate with partnering institutions to raise awareness and improve the impact of environmentally friendly activities in the higher education sector. Additionally, the local community and businesses and NGOs are also included in this initiative, which permits an even broader impact on the community as a whole. The engagement might go as far as establishing policies and collaborating, and making compromises with the industry.
Higher education institutions usually participate in greening activities on national and also international levels. The latter also facilitates inter-institutional collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Universities and colleges often exchange ideas and data and collaborate with research practices on reducing waste and energy.
