Rick Pitino is reportedly negotiating a lifetime contract with the Iona Gaels basketball program.

Pitino had made comments over the weekend that he hopes to be with Iona when he wins his 1,000th career game. He recorded his 800th career win on Sunday.

“I told the team that I’m glad that I got 800 here, but I said I want to get another 200 here,” Pitino said. “And God willing I don’t roll a seven anytime soon, maybe it will happen.

“This is a great job, we can make this into something really, really special…Great place, I’m really happy, I hope I can get 1,000 here. God willing, I hope I can live long enough to see that.”

College basketball insider Adam Zagoria reported the news.

Pitino joined Iona in 2020 after coaching two years overseas following his firing from Louisville amid multiple scandals.

During his time leading the Gaels, Pitino is 30-9.

Up next for Iona, which is undefeated in conference play and 18-3 overall, is a trip to Canisius on Friday night.
