A Netflix employee thought it would be a good idea to release financial details about how much the streaming platform spent on Dave Chappelle’s latest stand-up comedy special, The Closer.
As they should have expected, they were fired.
Netflix spent a whopping $24.1 million on the special, according to the employee who leaked the information to Bloomberg. That tops the $21.4 million that was spent on Netflix’s most popular show, Squid Game.
“We have let go of an employee for sharing confidential, commercially sensitive information outside the company,” a Netflix spokesperson told the Hollywood Reporter. “We understand this employee may have been motivated by disappointment and hurt with Netflix, but maintaining a culture of trust and transparency is core to our company.”
Netflix reportedly spent $23.6 million on Chappelle’s last special, Sticks and Stones.
As for the employee who was fired, they were the person who attempted to organize a walkout of transgender employees at Netflix.
“All these white people are going around talking to the press and speaking publicly on Twitter and the only person who gets fired is the Black person who was quiet the entire time,” they told The Verge. “That’s absurd, and just further shows that Black trans people are the ones being targeted in this conversation.”
Perhaps you should just avoid leaking confidential information to the public.

In 2017, Chappelle dropped four stand-up specials despite his lucrative deal with Netflix only requiring three. The specials were titled The Age of Spin, Deep in the Heart of Texas, Equanimity, and The Bird Revelation. In 2019, he followed up with Sticks & Stones.
“Dave Chappelle is a legendary voice in comedy — searing, vital and now more than ever, essential,” said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of original documentary and comedy, in a statement when the deal with Netflix was first announced. “Dave’s three new specials promise to be some of the most anticipated events in comedy, and we are honored he will mark his global return on Netflix.”
