Former USWNT goalkeeper Hope Solo ripped into current star Megan Rapinoe, accusing her of “bullying” her teammates into kneeling for the national anthem. Solo and Rapinoe were teammates for 10 years.
Solo shared her comments in a recent interview with Goal.com.
“I think the rhetoric surrounding this team has been both divisive and inclusive. I guess it’s kind of where we are in politics in this day and age,” Solo said. “I think the kneeling thing can be very divisive. I’ve seen Megan Rapinoe almost bully players into kneeling because she really wants to stand up for something in her particular way.”
There is one problem, however.
Solo last played for the United States women’s national team in the 2016 Rio Olympics. That was two weeks before Rapinoe began kneeling for the anthem to join Colin Kaepernick in his protest against police brutality and racial injustice, as Timothy Burke points out.
And if Rapinoe was attempting to bully her teammates, she was unsuccessful because she kneeled alone.
As for Solo, her career ended on a rocky note after assaulting two members of her family and getting suspended by the USWNT for calling insulting members of the Swedish national team. There was also the incident where Jerramy Stevens, Solo’s husband, was arrested for SUI after driving the Team USA van — which Solo was also suspended for.
