The United States women’s national team was bounced from the Tokyo Olympics courtesy of the neighbor up north, Canada. The USWNT dominated possession and was the better team throughout the match, but it was a penalty called thanks to VAR that gave Canada its first shot on target and the game-winning goal.
It was only the fourth time in 62 meetings that Canada knocked off the Americans.
Due to the nature of the stunning upset loss, which was the first USWNT loss to Canada in 20 years, fans on Twitter were predictably not happy with some calling into question the decision to call the penalty and others upset they woke up at 4 am to witness a loss.
The United States will now take on Australia in the bronze medal match later this week, while Canada will play Sweden for gold.

That just can't be the intended use of VAR. No one on either team thought there was a possible penalty there, and both teams were ready to continue play. I don't see how that's a clear and obvious mistake when the original call was consistent with other calls. #USWNT

That was a ridiculous call that handed the game to Canada!
Canada can’t claim the win and the US team was robbed of a fair game. #TokyoOlympics #USWNT #cheated— gritsygirl (@gritsygirl1) August 2, 2021
