Simone Biles was unable to help the United States win gold in the gymnastics team final after being forced to withdraw from the competition due to a “medical issue.” Team USA went on to finish in second place behind the Russia Olympic Committee.
“Simone has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue,” USA Gymnastics said in a statement. “She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions.”
Biles met with a trainer following her pass on the vault before heading to the locker room with the team doctor.
It is the latest setback for Biles early in the Tokyo run, after struggling in qualifications over the weekend. Despite her struggles, the 24-year-old star was able to qualify in first place for the individual overall competition.
Whether she will be healthy enough to compete, however, remains to be seen.
The four-time gold medalist commented on her struggles over the weekend, admitting to the pressure that she is feeling in Tokyo.
“It wasn’t an easy day or my best but I got through it,” Biles wrote on Instagram. “I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times. I know I brush it off and make it seem like pressure doesn’t affect me but damn sometimes it’s hard hahaha! The Olympics is no joke!”
