The USA women’s gymnastics team will not be taking the risk of staying in Olympic Village during the Tokyo Games.

After two positive COVID-19 tests were confirmed less than one week before the Opening Ceremony, the USA gymnastics team had one of its own members, alternate Kara Eaker, test positive for coronavirus.

As a result, Team USA will hunker down at a nearby hotel during the Summer Games, head coach Cecile Landi announced.

“We know it isn’t ideal for the Olympic experience but nothing is ideal during a pandemic,” Landi said via Twitter. “We feel like we can control the athletes and our safety better in a hotel setting!”

Two South African soccer players and a staff member previously tested positive inside of Olympic Village, so it is better safe than sorry as Team USA aims for the gold.

Let’s all hope that a surge in cases or an outbreak is avoided during the next few weeks.

The Olympics officially kick off on Friday, July 23, and will run through Sunday, August 8.
