Quentin Hillsman, head coach of the Syracuse women’s basketball team, has been accused of abuse and unwanted contact by players.

In a scathing report from The Athletic, nine former players and 19 former staffers or managers accused Hillsman of abuse, bullying, making threats, and unwanted physical contact which would include kissing players on their foreheads.

This season, 11 players requested transfers from the Syracuse women’s basketball program which was the most of any Division I basketball program (men or women).

Syracuse said it is opening up an investigation into the allegations.

“The allegations reported in The Athletic today are troubling. Based on the nature of these allegations, Syracuse University is engaging an outside firm to conduct an independent review and will take appropriate action based on its outcome,” a statement from the university read, according to Syracuse.com.

“While no formal complaints have been made to date from members of the women’s basketball program, we take these allegations very seriously. We ask any individual who has knowledge of or has experienced this kind of conduct to come forward. Syracuse University remains focused on the well-being and success of our student-athletes.”

Multiple players said the culture at Syracuse caused them to break down and to have suicidal thoughts.

“I was a great player. I was excited to play for a top program. We were top 10 when I committed, and all I wanted was to thrive,” said one player. “It’s not just a bad culture or program. It’s so toxic. It doesn’t matter who you are, what your light isif you’re a positive person, it’s going to break you.”

Syracuse is also being accused of not following through with investigations and complaints. In 2011, the father of a former player filed a Title IX complaint against Hillsman for inappropriate conduct.

Hillsman has been on the Orange coaching staff since 2005, before taking over as head coach a year later.
