Billy Joe Saunders suffered a fight-ending eye injury in the 8th round of his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez over the weekend at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Now, we are learning that the injury was way worse than anyone could have imagined.

In fact, Saunders’ fighting career is in jeopardy.

The 31-year-old was diagnosed with a quadripod fracture, according to The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger, which means his cheekbone was broken in four spots and the area will not be structurally compromised.

That’s devastating news for Saunders, who now sits at 30-1.

Saunders underwent surgery on the injured cheekbone on Sunday, but there has been no update on how the former champion is recovering. All we do know is that it will be months until we know whether Saunders will ever be able to step into the ring again.
