DAZN is distancing itself from the controversial European soccer “Super League” that was announced over the weekend.
A dozen of Europe’s top soccer clubs announced they will break away for the Super League with as many as three other clubs set to join in the future.
The league has been met with plenty of controversies, which has led streaming service DAZN to remain silent while speculation swirls that they could be the leading contender to land broadcast rights.
DAZN has publicly denied the allegations — for now — while FIFA has threatened to ban players involved from international competition and the Champions League also suggesting there will be punishment.
“In relation to a report by Corriere dello Sport today, this and related reports are false. Neither DAZN nor Mr. Blavatnik are in any way involved or interested in entering into discussions regarding the establishment of a Super League and no conversations have taken place,” DAZN said in a statement to Deadline’s Andreas Wiseman.
It will be interesting to see what happens as more information regarding the Super League in the coming months and whether negotiations will ultimately fall apart.
If they don’t, however, the league would shake up the sports world and be one of the most highly-sought after entities.
Perhaps DAZN would change its tune then.
