Microsoft could soon be making a major acquisition.
According to reports, Microsoft is in talks to buy video game-chat community Discord for more than a whopping $10 billion.
Microsoft recently acquired ZeniMax Media Inc., owner of Bethesda Softworks, for $7.5 billion.
Discord, which is based out of San Francisco, allows users to communicate on its platform through voice, video, and text. That has led to a growing community of more than 100 million monthly active users, according to Bloomberg.
The platform has recently been talking to potential buyers and Microsoft has emerged as one of the big-name suitors.
“Microsoft possibly acquiring Discord makes a lot of sense as it continues to reshape its gaming business more toward software and services,” said Bloomberg Intelligence Analyst Matthew Kanterman.
“There’s a big opportunity to bundle Discord’s premium offering, Nitro, into the Game Pass service to drive more subscriptions from the last reported 18 million.”
However, no deal is imminent.
If a deal was to take place, it would be a clear signal that Microsoft is continuing to invest in its video game portfolio and Discord could certainly help strengthen the gamer community for Xbox and much more.
“We expect Xbox to remain acquisitive to keep bolstering the value proposition of Game Pass and drive subscriptions higher,” Kanterman added.
