Paulo Costa had a lackluster performance in the biggest fight of his UFC. The Brazilian middleweight lost to current middleweight champion Israel Adesanya by second-round TKO at UFC 253 on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi back in September 2020.

Costa did not look like his usual, explosive self and now we know why.

According to the former title challenger, he drank “too much wine” and was hungover — and possibly still a little drunk — when he entered the cage against Adesanya.

That’s certainly not a winning strategy.

“I was kind of drunk [when] I fought, maybe, on hangover,” Costa said in a YouTube video, via MMAFighting.com. “I couldn’t sleep because of the [leg] cramps. Keep in mind that the fight happens at 9 a.m. [local time], we have to wake up at 5 to get ready, stretch, wrap the hands. The UFC told us to wake up at 5 in the morning to go to the arena to fight. I hadn’t slept until 2:30.

“It was my mistake and I don’t blame anyone else, it was something I chose [to do], but, in order to try to sleep, because I had to sleep since I was awake for 24 hours, I had wine, too much wine, a bottle [of wine] to try to black out. I had a glass and didn’t work. Two glasses, it didn’t work. Half bottle, didn’t work. I had it all.”

As for when we will see Costa return to the cage, that remains to be seen.

Adesanya, meanwhile, will be returning to action on March 6 at UFC 259 in Las Vegas when he moves to light heavyweight for a shot at the 205-pound title against current champion Jan Blachowicz.
