Chutich, who was believed to have been lying in the parking lot for several hours in freezing temperatures as low as 8 degrees, died of acute alcohol intoxication and hypothermia, according to the Ames Tribune.
The 21-year-old was born in Guatemala and was later adopted by Allina Health CEO Dr. Penny Wheeler and Minnesota State Supreme Court Justice Margaret Chutich.
“I want to extend my sympathies to Olivia’s family and friends during this difficult time,” Sharron Evans, ISU associate vice president of student affairs and dean of students, said in a statement, “the health and wellness of our students are always a priority.”
