There is more good news despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This week, the United Kingdom approved the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for use.

The rollout of the vaccine will begin on January 4 with 100 million doses of the vaccine being available.

The amount of doses means up to 50 million people could receive the vaccine.

This is the second vaccine to be approved by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) after the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was approved earlier this month.

“I am so happy we can end 2020 with such a moment of hope. We’ve always known a vaccine is the exit route from this pandemic. I am absolutely thrilled that the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine has been authorized for use today,” Health Secretary Matt Hancock said, via Newsweek.

“This is a real British success story, a moment of cheer for the whole nation and indeed the whole world, because this low-cost, easy store vaccine will save lives everywhere.

“I want to thank all those involved at Oxford University, AstraZeneca, the government civil servants who put in so much of the early funding and of course all those in the NHS (National Health Service) and the volunteers who helped the trials to make them a great success.”

This is just the latest positive step forward as we look to achieve some sort of normalcy in our every day lives.

The coronavirus mainly comes from animals and a majority of those who were infected early either worked at or frequently visited the Huanan seafood wholesale market in Wuhan, according to The Guardian. The virus is similar to Severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) and Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome (Mers).

The Wuhan coronavirus is transmitted from person to person through “droplet transmission.” That means an infected person can pass the virus by sneezing or coughing on another person as well as by direct contact.

While a majority of the cases have been detected in the United States and China — with more than 19.4 million confirmed cases and 336,000 deaths in the United States — it has now reached many countries around the world. It has also been confirmed in Italy, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and many other eastern countries.
