Andee Lantz, a 26-year-old special education teacher from Oklahoma, has been charged with rape after being accused of sleeping with a 16-year-old student, according to KWTV-DT.

Suspicions raised regarding a potential relationship when a student began sharing a nude photo of the teacher before it made its way to the school superintendent.

Lantz later admitted that she and the student began a relationship after he kissed her following a homecoming game.

She was booked on second-degree rape charges and later released on bond.

From the Daily Mail:

The 26-year-old special-education teacher also admitted to having sex two or three times with the minor, according to the court papers. At least one of the trysts was said to have taken place at Lantz’s home in Carnegie. The superintendent noted that the student was not in any of Lantz’s classes.

‘It makes me sick to my stomach,’ said local parent Susan Clark. The age of consent in Oklahoma is 16, but that does not apply to relations between a teacher and a student.

Over the course of the past year alone, a handful of teachers have been arrested on similar charges, including 25-year-old substitute teacher Alexis Mercedes Boberg in Baltimore, Beulah High School teacher Kelsie Schmidt in North Dakota, Rancocas Valley Regional High School teacher Alexandra Reiner in New Jersey, and 50-year-old Florida substitute teacher Angela Jean Stanton in Florida. Additionally, Texas teachers Meredith Null and Edna Longoria were arrested on similar charges.

As for why the number of these incidents has seemingly increased, studies suggest that smartphones are the primary reason for the spike in illicit relationships, as it allows teachers to communicate with the minors without supervision.

According to a report from the Texas Education Association, smartphones make easy for teachers to privately text and talk with students and also make it possible for teachers and students to share explicit images.
