The hype for UFC 257 is very real. On January 23, 2021, a rematch between former two-division champion Conor McGregor and former interim champion Dustin Poirer was the headliner. Since COVID-19 took over 2020, the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) has spent the last nine months trying to keep the struggling franchise in front of the train.

With just six weeks away, UFC President Dana White and company finally turned their attention to “McGregor vs. Poirer 2.” The company recently released the official promotional video for the fight. In terms of hype packages, this is an absolute banger.

The Hype Is Real

McGregor was one of the top UFC predictions in Round 1 of McGregor vs. Poirer, and he will be the favorite heading into this fight as well. With many fans excited to see McGregor return, the company wanted to sell the fight. The video is 2.5 minutes long and starts by recapping the first meeting between McGregor and Poirer in 2014. During that fight, it was McGregor that came out with a quick first-round dismantling of Poirer. Right after that, it shows Poirer’s progress and evolution made over the last six years. Poirer has changed his fighting style, slowly becoming one of the most successful fighters at 155 pounds.

McGregor is 6-2 since facing Poirier and has retired from the sport two times. Poirer is 10-2-1 and will be McGregor’s toughest test. Since McGregor lost to Khabib Numagomedov, McGregor’s lone win came against a skidding Donald Cerrone. All in all, the trailer will get you as hyped as waiting for Forest Griffin to fight Showgun back in the day.

Joining The Card

A new addition to the fight card includes a light heavyweight battle between Khalil Rountree and Marcin Prachnio. On Saturday’s broadcast of UFC 256, the officials announced the pairing. Rountree’s addition to the card confirms that he will not be leaving the sport. Rountree was hinting at a potential retirement but decided to continue his fighting career. He last fought in 2019 after a loss to Ion Cutelaba. He was originally expected to fight in March, but COVID-19 forced the fight to be canceled. Rountree is a former Ultimate Fight competitor and looks to get back to winning ways. He is just 4-4 with one no contest in his first fights since the promotion.

Prachnio is still searching for his first win in the JFC after losing three straight contests inside the octagon. His losses are to Sam Alvey, Magomed Ankalaev, and Mike Rodriguez in consecutive bouts after putting together an eight-fight win streak in ONE Championship, an organization outside the UFC.

Others featured on the main card include Jessica Eye and Joanne Calderwood, as well as top-10 ranked straw-weights Marina Rodriguez and Amanda Ribas. While many are hopeful that 2021 leaves the year 2020 behind, the UFC is starting the year off with a bang. The preliminaries will start around 7:00, while the main card will start around 9:00. The preliminaries can be watched for free on ESPN.
