Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine Has Led to ‘Significant’ Allergic Reactions

The Pfizer vaccine rolled out in the United Kingdom this week with the first 800,000 doses of the vaccine being allocated to people over 80 who have been hospitalized due to COVID-19, along with workers at nursing homes.

Unfortunately, though it was expected, the vaccine has led to some “significant allergic reactions.”

Following the news of the reactions, the Food and Drug Administration’s vaccine advisory committee will be looking into the reactions before recommending it for emergency use authorization, according to the New York Post.

“My expectation is that this is new news, and I would assume — but of course the FDA will make those decisions — that tomorrow this will be part of the consideration,” Moncef Slaoui, chief adviser to the Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed initiative said at a press briefing.

“As in the UK, the expectation would be that subjects with known severe reaction, allergic reactions, should not take the vaccine until we understand exactly what happened here.”

Earlier this week, 90-year-old Margaret Keenan became the first person to receive the COVID-19 vaccine which was produced by Pfizer and BioNTech.

The coronavirus mainly comes from animals and a majority of those who were infected early either worked at or frequently visited the Huanan seafood wholesale market in Wuhan, according to The Guardian. The virus is similar to Severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) and Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome (Mers).

The Wuhan coronavirus is transmitted from person to person through “droplet transmission.” That means an infected person can pass the virus by sneezing or coughing on another person as well as by direct contact.

While a majority of the cases have been detected in the United States and China — with more than 15.5 million confirmed cases and 290,000 deaths in the United States — it has now reached many countries around the world. It has also been confirmed in Italy, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and many other eastern countries.
