Peyton Manning had a decent dad weekend in Denver where he threw on a jacket and headed down to the Pepsi Center for the Eric Church show on a Saturday night to see a fellow 40-something do his thing, but then Michael Phelps showed up and Peyton was pretty much suckered into doing a shot with Church and Phelps.
Some of you know how these nights go for 40-somethings. There’s always the guy in his 40s who gets plowed Wednesday after golf all the way through Sunday Funday (let’s say Church plays this roll). Then there’s the guy, 33, who likes hanging out with the older crowd because it makes his wife comfortable knowing the old guys will sorta be responsible since they don’t want to lose their jobs/marketing deals (let’s say Phelps plays this roll). Then there’s the 43 year old who gets out with the guys once a month, but then when he gets out he goes on a bender, crushes shots, starts thinking about life back in the day when he was on top of the world and how now he’s relegated to country club dinners and going to bed after the nightly news (let’s say Peyton Manning plays this roll).
See, these guys aren’t much different than you.
I find myself wondering about Peyton from time to time and how he operates at home. Is he the kind of guy who fires up the grill and invites over Brad from next door so they can shoot the breeze and crush IPAs on a nice Friday afternoon? Does Peyton get a shovel out on a Sunday and dig a hole for a new conifer because he wants to feel what it’s like to be alive on the inside instead of waiting for his landscaping guys to do it?
That’s the E:60 I want to see on these guys. I already know Brett Favre is out there on his Mississippi farm slinging straw bales and battling rattlesnakes. I know a guy like Karl Malone is down in Louisiana grilling meat at his wife Kay’s fast casual spot. I want to know what some of these greats do on random Saturdays when they have a day to do nothing. Does Peyton get the leaf blower out to randomly blow off parts of the deck that didn’t really need it?
This Saturday he had at least one shot with his buddy Eric who’s out there pounding Wednesday through Sunday.
