Lawrence Okoye could go down as a trivia answer for the Alliance of American Football. Okoye, a member of the Birmingham Iron, was arrested this week on prostitution solicitation charges by the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force. Okoye, according to the Internet, was/is married to Pippa Okoye, who goes by Pippa Burke on IG. No word if that relationship was over or if L-Dogg was trying to get some road tail in Birmingham. Wiki says the couple married in 2014 and there’s been no word of divorce.
Anyway, this immediately puts the AAF into PR mode with the season starting Saturday. The league officially has its first black eye and will need to craft a response as the Iron prepare to host Memphis Saturday at 4 ET.
Lawrence Okoye, 27, and 12 others were snared in an operation by the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force, the team’s third phase of the ongoing probe since September. He is a British track and field star and holds the British record in the discus event. He previously played rugby, as well, and was named one of 10 players to watch by AL.com as the Iron begins its first season.
Okoye – listed on the Iron roster as a 6-foot-6, 311-pound defensive lineman from Croydon, England – has no college football experience. He is a former rugby player and track star, who finished 12th in the discus in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Okoye was signed by the San Francisco 49ers in 2013, but suffered a preseason injury, and he has since spent time on the practice squad with the Cardinals, Jets and Cowboys and has been on the roster and later cut by the Bears and Dolphins.
