Let’s be honest here, if 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens and his wife Haleigh Mullens walked into a San Francisco Applebees not a soul would turn their head and take notice. I’m not even sure Nick Mullens would cause a commotion at a Golden Corral in Hattiesburg, Mississippi where Nick and Haleigh went he played football and she was on the cheerleading team.
Folks, we are talking about one of the most nondescript quarterbacks to get a start in the NFL and that’s saying something because Nathan Peterman is still out there. Nick Mullens was called on to play tonight against the Raiders because CJ Beathard is injured and it’s a next man up scenario.
Enter Nick Mullens from Southern Miss. Guys, he was undrafted and idolized Brett Favre. This is fairy tale stuff. From the San Francisco Examiner:
After Mullens broke Favre’s records for passing yards (11,994) and touchdowns (87), and won Conference USA Player of the Year as a junior, he set himself towards playing in the Senior Bowl. When asked about his preparation before the draft, he told 49ers quarterbacks coach Rick Scangarello that he’d studied film of drop-back passers to prepare, since he’d played in a spread, shotgun system for the Golden Eagles.
“He had to look up on YouTube how to do drops and stuff under center because he was always in (shotgun) throughout college,” Shanahan said. “That’s the kind of guy he is. He’s going to figure it out. He’s going to work all day to figure it out on his own, with the help of coaches and stuff, he takes that as well as anyone.”
It’s not even halftime as I type this, but Nick Mullens has a 14-3 lead, starting to get buzz on the Internet and is 9 of 11 for 103 yards and two touchdown passes. Get used to that name because there’s a GM out there who officially wants Mullens as a second string QB.
Did I mention these two have a goldendoodle?
