Mississippi State head coach Joe Moorhead kicked off Week 1 with some pretty big news: quarterback Nick Fitzgerald is suspended for Saturday’s season opener against Stephen F. Austin. Fitzgerald violated team rules back in March — Cory Thomas and Michael Story will also be on the pine Saturday.
Nick Fitzgerald will not play this weekend for Mississippi State. He and Cory Thomas are suspended along with Michael Story for the season opener.

What does this mean for Mississippi State? Probably nothing. They’re still going to kick ass with Keytaon Thompson behind center. He started in the TaxSlayer Bowl last season and rushed for 147 yards and three touchdowns. Stingray and Bulldogs have nothing to worry about, we think.
Thompson has apparently been taking first-team reps since Friday in preparation:
Moorhead says Keytaon Thompson, who will start against Stephen F. Austin, has been taking the No. 1 reps since Friday. Fitzgerald took the starter reps before that.

Fitzgerald has been the starter for the Bulldogs for the last two seasons and threw for 1,782 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2017. Of course, he also suffered a bad ankle injury in November but has worked hard to get back into form.
