Report: 76ers Interested In Acquiring Good Basketball Players This Offseason

In news that will perturb Lakers fans,’s Keith Pompey reports the 76ers are interested in landing every free agent who matters this offseason. You already know the names here: LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, and Paul George. Any one of those guys would certainly fit well playing with TJ McConnell and Joel Embiid.

The Sixers can’t publicly say so until July 1, but it doesn’t take an engineering degree to realize the team is prepared to do whatever it takes to sign James, a four-time league MVP. Oklahoma City small forward Paul George is another free agent the Sixers have interest in, according to folks around the league. He would be a great fit because of his ability to shoot the ball and defend.
Don’t be surprised if they also try to acquire San Antonio Spurs small forward Kawhi Leonard in a trade. Sources have said the Sixers have expressed interest in the two-time all-star. While he is eligible for a five-year, $219-million “super-max” extension with the Spurs this summer, there are reports that Leonard wants out after staying away from the team for most of the season with a quad injury. He played in only nine games.

Head coach Brett Brown said last week he believes his team “needs help” to win a championship, and it appears the front office has heard the message loud and clear.
As for whether or not this is actually plausible, it is! Pompey notes the 76ers have plenty of cap space and can create more room by renouncing the rights to a bunch of their players (JJ Redick, Ersan Ilyasova, Marco Belinelli, etc.). Basically the primarily goal here is to outperform the Lakers when they make their pitches to Bron Bron and Playoff P because money isn’t the issue.
