Folks, the people that run the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club are not playing games when it comes to the resale of tournament tickets. You know how I know? Because I was cruising IG last night and came across the above letter that Golf.com got its hands on telling someone who sold Masters tickets that his/her tickets had been revoked.
That’s right, if you’re reselling tickets to the Masters, there’s a possibility the ban hammer is going to be dropped on your head.
From Golf.com:
The tournament has long prohibited the reselling of its coveted single-day tickets and multi-day badges, but last year it added a new defense to catch offenders: color-coded strips on the bottom of the tickets that the tournament’s ticket police can use as secret decoder rings of sorts to determine the original purchasers. Each of the colors in the six-color design represents a letter and five numbers that match the corresponding ticket number.
It is unknown whether the club is using the strips to make an example of a few unlucky sellers or to power a wider-scale crackdown.
Augusta National Golf Club declined to comment for this story.
I went through the Masters ticket application process last spring and found out in June that I wasn’t selected to buy tickets to any round this year. Your odds are long to ever get a ticket through the lottery system. Enter the black market for Masters tickets.
Here comes the problem: people are going to stop taking the risk of selling their single-day badges to ticket brokers over the fear they’re about to lose the tickets. My head is spinning right now thinking of the ticket situation to the grandaddy of them all for us normal guys who just want to see that perfect green grass once in life.
Even with the ban hammer being dropped by Augusta National, the secondary market is still humming along. A weekly badge is on StubHub right now for $9,250 – EACH. There are a couple of others for $21,000+.
The prices over at SeatGeek are a little lower, sitting right now in the $6,500 range.
