Alex Meruelo will invest up to $100 million to revitalize the SLS Las Vegas after the Nevada Gaming Commission approved his acquisition Thursday of the struggling Strip property.
The Reno-based businessman will spend the money in the coming years to upgrade rooms, redesign the pool, brighten the casino floor and refresh the slot machine offerings, said spokesman Christopher Abraham.

Since Meruelo agreed to purchase the property in May, there’s been speculation that he may change the hotel’s name back to the famed Sahara. The SLS brand is owned by Sam Nazarian’s sbe Entertainment.

I have a soft spot in my heart for that Sahara property. That was the first place I placed extensive amounts of blackjack back in the day because they had $1 BJ, some of the best drink service you could get at a cheap casino and the place was filled with degenerates, college kids and people just looking to get bombed for as little amount of money as possible. I could take $50 into Sahara and sit there for 14 hours.
It was my go-to when I would stay at the Hilton with friends who were in town for conventions. The food was garbage, but they would let your ass drink until you couldn’t walk. Great memories in there.
