Paul Pierce Wants His Jersey Retirement Night All to Himself

Unfortunately for everyone, the Isaiah Thomas-Celtics video drama somehow rolled on today.

IT, of course, has been super picky about when this tribute should be played, and requested the highlight package be played on his second return to Boston, Dec. 11 — the same night Paul Pierce happens to be getting his jersey retired. Celtics GM Danny Ainge has confirmed the team will play the video that night as requested, so this should be put to rest, right?

Nope! Some Boston fans are pissed Danny would dare do this, and Pierce himself stated on The Jump he’d rather not see IT highlights on his night:

Paul Pierce on The Jump: “I’m not saying Isaiah shouldn’t get a tribute video … but on February 11, the night I get my jersey retired, I’m not sure I want to look up at the JumboTron and see Isaiah highlights."

Pierce is apparently hoping for his own version of Kobe Night:

Paul Pierce noted how he was present for Kobe’s jersey retirement and liked how the Lakers celebrated him during timeouts.

"I enjoyed watching that throughout the game. Hopefully the Boston Celtics will do that for me. I”m not sure I want to see an Isaiah video that night."

Petty, but you can understand Paul’s stance given he spent 15 years of his career with the team and delivered a championship. He’s a Celtics legend while IT was a fun fling who got axed when a better player (Kyrie Irving) became available.

IT made his first return to Boston on Wednesday, but didn’t play because it was the second game of a back to back. He was still welcomed with a massive ovation from Celtics fans:

He doesn’t believe he’s taking any of Pierce’s shine:

"That's @paulpierce34's night. But the video tribute ain't the whole night." #Cavs guard Isaiah Thomas says he wants his family to be here when #Celtics honor him."I'm not taking nothing from Paul Pierce. He did 15 years here.If they choose to do it that night,I would be honored." pic.twitter.com/h6lAbB9Oe8
