Will former Ohio State punter Cameron Johnston hear his name get called at this week’s NFL Draft? Maybe! Walter Football has a sixth round-FA projection on the Aussie style punter, while Fox Sports reports Johnston has worked out with the Eagles, Bengals, Bills, Packers, and Chargers. The interest is definitely there, so Johnston’s worst-case scenario is that he gets scooped up in free agency to compete for a spot.
NFL.com’s scouting report on Johnston:
STRENGTHS Has some experience (and training) as a conventional punter. Produced solid fair catch percentage when allowed to hang the ball for placement. Struck the ball with very good consistency this year, eliminating most shanks. Averaged 46.7 yards per kick in 2016. His net of 43.9 was second in college football. Has hit at least one 70-plus yard punt in three of four seasons.
WEAKNESSES Rugby style is his primary operation as a kicker. Will have to prove he can kick conventionally and with hang time. Never averaged hang time over four seconds over last three seasons. Can eliminate some touchbacks.
Off the field, Johnston is yet another punter killing it in the girlfriend department as he’s dating fellow Buckeye, Tia Williams. She’s a journalism major who’s interned for the Big 10 Network.
