Home Plate Umpire Jerry Layne Has His Own Scouting Report

You’d assume the MLB would assign only the best umpires they have for Opening Day — god forbid we endure an umpshow on the first day of a six month journey — but nope, we have Jerry Layne out there calling balls and strikes for this Yankees-Rays game. He’s so special behind the dish that he has his very own scouting report:

Here's an interesting one from MLB opening day: A scouting report for the umpire. Imagine if they did this for refs in football. pic.twitter.com/N8MdB9yJjB

“Rarely gives inside corner.” Brilliant.

How about you just call a strike a strike and a ball a ball, Jerr? You know, instead of staying true to your own ridiculous tendencies and ringing guys up on pitches located in the opposite batter’s box:

Great strikeout call, though. Very theatrical.
