Sad Tennis News: Ana Ivanovic Retires at 29

We’re all tired of people proclaiming 2016 as the worst year ever, but maybe it really is. It’s the last week before the calendar flips over to 2017 and the bad news just keeps on rolling in: Carrie Fisher dead, Rex and Rob Ryan unemployed, Phil Jackson and Jeanie Buss are through, etc., etc.

And now the curse of 2016 has hit the tennis world, as Serbian star Ana Ivanovic decided to call it a career today at the age of 29. Totally floored. Two weeks ago Ana dropped an IG picture on the tennis court with the caption, “putting the work in” — fast-forward to today and she hits us with her retirement statement on Twitter:

To my dear supporters….

The news isn’t totally out of left field considering Ana’s best days were back in 2008 when she won the French Open and rose to No. 1, but still, it always stings to lose a tennis smoke.

We really need Genie Bouchard to get back in form and Maria Sharapova to return ASAP.
